The work of current Visual Arts student, Askild Winkelmann, has been chosen as the front cover image of Untold Stories One, the first in a series of annual publications featuring extracts from the debut novels-in-progress of second year students on the MA Creative Writing & Publishing programme at West Dean College.
All contributing authors had hands-on involvement in the production and publication of the anthology, inviting their peers from the School of Creative Arts to make proposals for the cover design. The winning layout features close details of Askild’s large-scale paintings, which combine a variety of materials on canvas. As part of setting up the anthology series, the Creative Writing students also established a new imprint, Houlihan & Wolfa, named after the beloved Irish wolfhounds belonging to College’s founder Edward James, and to whom he dedicated his only published novel, The Gardener Who Saw God (1937). In the first year of their Master’s programme, the Creative Writing students complete the first draft of a novel, before redrafting opening scenes in the first term of year two for inclusion in the anthology.
