Open Day – Saturday 4 February 2017

John Walls by Christopher Ison

On Saturday 4th February West Dean College will be holding an Open Day for students interested in learning more about programmes of study both in the School of Creative Arts and the School of Conservation. All prospective students will get a feel for the College’s immersive creative atmosphere, will tour the student accommodation and Library facilities, glimpsing the historic interiors of the Main House used for site-specific work. Prospective Visual Arts students will be invited to tour the large spaces housed within the Edward James Studios, learning about various facilities and services available as part of the programmes. As well as connecting with Programme Leaders and Tutors, visitors will meet current students who can further inform them about student life and opportunities, as well as other staff members who can discuss funding options. Open House interventions

Building upon students’ existing practices and enhancing their professional profiles, proposals were encouraged to be specific to West Dean House.  Continue reading

Hunting for a Hut

A small search began for a shelter. Emerging from the desire to live off the land, the project has now become a key part of my MA project: exploring the creative possibilities inherent in establishing a place to live and work, and the ability to move on to new pastures. Craving a caravan, I left scribblings on people’s camper vans pleading for their sale, even slipped notes beneath doors of any house which had a battered-looking wagon on the drive. Neither method had positive results. Materials Workshops

Forge workshop - Alex Coode and Jon Privett

This week there were two workshops available to Visual Arts students:  an introduction to painting materials led by Rebecca Partridge and a joint workshop with the Metals Conservation students in the Forge, with an introduction to methods and materials with Alex Coode  and Jon Privett. Rebecca, a painter based in Berlin, concentrated her workshop on paper and canvas stretching, preparation and application of primer and various tips of the trade. She also gave a presentation on her practice and conducted one-to-one tutorials with the full-time students. Alex Coode is an artist blacksmith who specialises in traditional and contemporary hand-forged ironwork, with a natural fluidity that is his own special signature. Jon Privett is Programme Tutor in Metals Conservation at West Dean College. Their workshop covered basic blacksmithing and welding techniques and introduced students to the possibilities available to them in the West Dean Forge.
