Artist-in-Residence Exhibition

Florence Peake’s RITE is a layered reinterpretation of a monument in Modernism’s history: Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, composed in 1913 for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky, the original performance is notorious for the riot it provoked on the first night, when theatregoers apoplectic with anger had to be forcibly removed. Peake’s take, though, has little to do with those mythological beginnings. Instead, it taps into The Rite of Spring’s vital force, lending it a renewed sense of urgency.  Continue reading

Artist-in-Residence: Yelena Popova (Part 2)

Yelena Popova recently returned to West Dean College’s Visual Arts studios to complete her residency, the first phase of which began in February 2017. During the remaining two weeks of her project, Yelena continued to experiment with ongoing work in ceramics, including making glazes with locally sourced materials. This intense period of making resulted in a number of new works, giving Yelena the opportunity to make use of some of the College’s Raku firings. This traditional Japanese method results in unpredictable  textures and surface effects in the fired clay, which expanded Yelena’s experience and understanding of the possibilities of different material combinations and firing techniques. Curators visit the Summer Show

As part of the Professional Practice units supporting the staging of ‘Critical Paths’, the Visual Arts Summer Show 2017, the students were visited by two curators, both of whom toured the exhibition, discussing the work in detail and the art world in general. Most recently, we welcomed Anabelle Görgen, Curator at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, who was also visiting West Dean to conduct her own research in the Edward James Archive.
